Delhi Government Prioritizes Student Housing Safety Following Tragic Incident

New Delhi, September 16 (Daily Kiran) : The Delhi government is taking significant steps to improve housing safety for students in the wake of the recent building collapse in Satya Niketan. Under the leadership of Minister Ashish Sood, a high-powered committee convened for its inaugural meeting on Tuesday to address student accommodation and safety concerns.

Attendees included the Chief Secretary of Delhi, the Police Commissioner, the Chairperson of the NDMC, the Commissioner of the MCD, and senior officials from various departments. The committee is focused on ensuring safe, accessible, and improved housing arrangements for students attending colleges and universities across the city.

Minister Sood emphasized the need for better regulation and management of paying guest accommodations and coaching institutes. The meeting involved detailed discussions with relevant authorities regarding the proper operation of these facilities, addressing critical issues such as structural safety, fire safety, and the overall mental and physical security of students.

To streamline information related to students and paying guest facilities, the government is developing a dedicated portal. This proposed system will focus on the registration of PG operators and the organization of data concerning student housing.

Sood highlighted that merely constructing new hostels is insufficient. It is equally vital to ensure the safety, maintenance, and regulatory compliance of existing PG facilities. The government aims to create a regulatory framework that addresses not only student safety but also essential aspects like food, rent, and other amenities.

Additionally, the minister referenced the ‘Aashirwad Ka Diya’ program held on Prime Minister Modi‘s birthday, noting the government’s commitment to community service initiatives. He underscored the transformative changes being implemented in Delhi under Chief Minister Rekha Gupta’s leadership.
