New Delhi, September 16 (Daily Kiran) : President Donald Trump expressed his support for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s efforts to combat drug trafficking during a recent announcement in New Delhi.
On September 16, 2026, U.S. Ambassador to India, Sergio Gore, stated that Trump welcomed Modi’s initiatives in addressing the global challenge of illegal drugs. The remarks came as Trump released a worldwide report on drug trafficking. He emphasized that the United States appreciates Modi’s commendable work in fighting illegal narcotics and reaffirmed the commitment of both nations to continue their collaborative efforts.
The U.S. State Department also issued a statement acknowledging the Indian government’s actions to curb illegal opium cultivation and enhance the integrity of supply chains. The department expressed hope for ongoing cooperation through the U.S.-India drug policy framework.
In the report, the United States identified India among the countries listed as major producers or transit points for illegal drugs in 2027. This list includes nations such as Afghanistan, Mexico, and Colombia.
It is important to note that being on this list does not imply a failure by any government to combat drug trafficking. Rather, it reflects geographical and economic factors that contribute to a country’s role as a natural transit or production center, regardless of the enforcement measures in place.
Meanwhile, Trump highlighted the “historic progress” made by his administration in tackling drug trafficking and narco-terrorist organizations. He pointed to enhanced border security, reduced drug seizures, and a significant decline in overdose deaths as evidence of this progress.
Trump claimed that drug seizures at the U.S. southern border have decreased by more than half following four years of what he described as “open border chaos.” He also reported a “substantial drop” in overdose-related fatalities, asserting that his administration has saved thousands of American lives.
