Sichuan, September 16 (Daily Kiran) : In the mountainous region of Shide County, located in the Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture of Sichuan Province, over 20 hectares of apple orchards are ready for harvest. This area, situated more than 2,000 meters above sea level, is witnessing a significant boost in the income of local villagers through apple farming.
Seven years ago, Huang Yong returned to his hometown after working away and decided to rent mountainous land to cultivate apples. Taking advantage of the region’s favorable climate and abundant sunshine, he developed a cyclical agricultural model combining pig farming with fruit cultivation, following expert advice.
Under this model, manure from the pig farm is fermented to create organic fertilizer, which is then used for over 30,000 apple trees. This approach links farming and animal husbandry, resulting in an environmentally friendly agricultural system.
Two years ago, Huang Yong’s son, Huang Qincheng, returned home after graduating from university to assist his father in managing an industrial park that includes a modern pig farming center, raising tens of thousands of pigs annually.
The apples produced here are popular among buyers in cities like Guangzhou and Beijing, known for their eco-friendly quality and their crisp, sweet, and juicy taste. Some of these apples are even exported to Vietnam.
Meanwhile, the “company + cooperative + farmer” model has opened new income avenues for local villagers. They earn rental income from the land and can make about 80 yuan daily by working in the orchards. Huang Qincheng plans to expand the orchards and develop industries such as rural tourism, fruit and vegetable picking, and apple processing. This will create more job opportunities locally and help increase the villagers’ income.
