Delhi Government Extends 100% Waiver on Outstanding Water Bills Until March 2027

New Delhi, August 16: The Delhi government has announced significant relief for water consumers. The state has extended the 100% waiver on late payment surcharge (LPSC) for both domestic and non-domestic consumers until March 31, 2027. Water Minister Pravesh Sahib Singh shared this information on Sunday.

This extension comes at a time when the scheme has already provided considerable relief to consumers across Delhi. So far, 527,000 consumers, including both domestic and non-domestic, have benefited from this waiver program.

The relief has been substantial, with LPSC amounting to ₹3,261 crores waived off. This has provided significant financial relief to consumers who are settling their outstanding water bills.

On the revenue front, the Delhi Jal Board has collected ₹815.84 crores from domestic and non-domestic consumers to date. An official statement noted that this is aiding the board in recovering actual dues while also providing relief to citizens.

The scheme includes 1.409 million domestic and 70,312 commercial consumers, giving a large number of residents and establishments in Delhi the opportunity to clear their old outstanding water bills.

Minister Pravesh Sahib Singh emphasized that this extension reflects the Delhi government’s commitment to financial discipline and sensitivity towards common consumers. He added that old water bills can be a source of concern for families for years. When LPSC continues to accrue, it becomes challenging to make payments. The government aims to provide a genuine opportunity for consumers to pay the principal amount and be free from the burden of LPSC.

He clarified that the relief process has been kept simple and transparent. “We are not asking people to overpay. We are asking them to pay only what they truly owe. A 100% waiver on LPSC will be granted upon payment of the principal amount. This is real relief for consumers and a responsible way to strengthen the financial position of the water board,” he stated.

The minister also made it clear that the extended deadline should not be viewed as an indefinite waiver. According to the Delhi Jal Board’s order, the waiver has been extended until March 31, 2027, and no further extensions will be granted after this date.
