Israel Claims Death of Senior Hezbollah Commander in Airstrike

Jerusalem, August 16: The Israeli military announced on Sunday that a senior commander of Hezbollah’s Badr Regional Division was killed in an airstrike in southern Lebanon. According to Lebanese media, the attack resulted in the deaths of four individuals.

The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) stated that Abu Hasan Ala was killed late Saturday night during an assault on Deir al-Zahrani. Israel described this strike as a response to drone attacks targeting its soldiers in southern Lebanon, which had left three soldiers injured.

Lebanon’s official National News Agency reported that Israeli fighter jets targeted a two-story building, resulting in four fatalities and five injuries.

On the same day, an Israeli airstrike on the village of Ansar claimed the lives of seven people, marking one of the most severe assaults since the ceasefire established in 2024.

In a statement, the IDF confirmed that it had eliminated a commander of Hezbollah’s elite Radwan Force during overnight airstrikes in southern Lebanon. The deceased was identified as Ali Samir al-Haj Hassan, who held the position of battalion commander within the unit.

The IDF also noted that the commander was killed at Hezbollah’s headquarters in the city of Ansar, and this attack was a direct response to Hezbollah’s aggression against the Israeli forces operating in a “security zone.”

Meanwhile, Candice Ardil, spokesperson for the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), emphasized the need for an international presence in southern Lebanon. Ardil reported that UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has presented three options for consideration to the United Nations Security Council.

She added that UNIFIL peacekeepers are present in southern Lebanon and will continue to support the implementation of Security Council Resolution 1701, which is deemed essential for stability in the region.
