Manchester, August 16: Manchester United defender Harry Maguire has expressed his desire for Marcus Rashford to remain at Old Trafford. He believes that Rashford’s presence could significantly impact the team’s performance and play a crucial role in United’s efforts to start the new season on a high note.
Rashford made his return for United in a pre-season match against AC Milan in Wroclaw, where the team suffered a 4-2 defeat. This match marked his first appearance for the club since December 2024. With the transfer window still open, uncertainty surrounds his future. However, Maguire is confident that Rashford’s skills and experience will be invaluable as United prepares for the new Premier League season.
The transfer window remains open until September 1, leaving questions about Rashford’s future unresolved. There is also no definitive decision regarding the number 9 jersey, especially since Benjamin Sesko, who was expected to wear it this season, is sidelined due to injury.
Maguire acknowledged that he is unsure of what will happen with Rashford but made it clear that he hopes his teammate stays with the team. According to the BBC, Maguire stated, “Of course, the transfer window is still open. As a player, we hope he stays because if he does, he will be a massive asset for the team. He can definitely make us better. You saw when he came on, he troubled the opposition’s defense a lot. He could have scored as well. He is a huge threat. I have played with Marcus for many years, and I know that playing against him and training with him helps us.”
Following the pre-season loss, Maguire emphasized the need for United to show more energy and aggression as they prepare for the new season. He remarked, “We want to play higher up the pitch, be more aggressive, and stay on the front foot. This was the only match where I felt we did not perform to our potential in that regard. We regained possession several times and created many chances, but we could not maintain the pressure as much as we needed to.”
Maguire also spoke positively about former United manager Ruben Amorim, who was in charge of the club for 14 months before leaving. He said, “It was great to see him and his entire staff. I had a good relationship with Ruben and his staff. I’m glad he has another opportunity to show how great a manager he is. I have no bad feelings about Ruben. It just didn’t work out at Manchester United.”
Manchester United finished the 2025-26 Premier League season in third place with 71 points, achieving 20 wins, 11 draws, and 7 losses. They will kick off the 2026-27 season against newly promoted Hull City FC on August 22.
