Dhaka, February 25: A significant uproar has emerged following the 13th parliamentary elections in Bangladesh regarding the 50 reserved seats for women in the parliament. Political parties are in a frenzy over the nominations for these seats. Meanwhile, the Election Commission (EC) has indicated that a schedule for these reserved seats may be announced during Ramadan.
According to Bangladeshi media outlet The Daily Star, the Election Commission reported on Tuesday that the parliamentary secretariat has submitted a voter list of 296 parliamentary members who will elect representatives for the 50 reserved seats.
Mohammad Monir Hossain, Deputy Secretary of the EC Secretariat, informed The Daily Star that these 50 reserved seats are allocated to political parties based on their representation of women in parliament, and the members are filled through indirect elections.
Election Commissioner Abdur Rahmanel Masood stated, “We will not take much time. We will announce the schedule before Eid.”
Regarding how many seats each party may receive, Commissioner Masood explained that to qualify for one reserved seat, a party must win at least six parliamentary seats in the general elections.
The Daily Star reported that according to the law governing these reserved seats, the BNP will receive approximately 34.66 seats, rounded up to 35. The Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami will get around 11.33 seats, totaling 11, while independent candidates will receive 1.16 percent. If they form an alliance, this will equate to one seat. The National Citizen Party (NCP) will receive one seat, while smaller parties will not receive any seats unless they form alliances.
Commissioner Masood noted that the voting process for the reserved seats has “actually already begun.”
When asked about the timing for the elections of the reserved women’s seats, EC Abdur Rahmanel Masood replied, “This election is essentially for the parties present in parliament. We can consider any nominee they put forward as a candidate. This process must be completed within 90 days of taking the oath, and we will adhere to this timeframe.”
