Major Drug Bust in Assam: Police Seize ₹3.18 Crore Worth of Banned Cough Syrup, Two Smugglers Arrested

Guwahati, July 29: Assam police have made a significant move against drug trafficking, seizing 31,800 bottles of banned cough syrup during two separate operations in the Shreebhumi district. The estimated value of the confiscated drugs is around ₹3.18 crore. Authorities have arrested two alleged smugglers in connection with this case.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma praised the police for their efforts, highlighting the positive outcomes of the ongoing anti-drug campaign in the state. He noted that such actions are delivering a substantial blow to organized criminal networks.

In a post on the social media platform X, Chief Minister Sarma congratulated the Shreebhumi police for their successful anti-drug operations, stating, “Good results are emerging from vigilance across Assam. Congratulations to the Shreebhumi police for seizing 31,800 banned bottles worth ₹3.18 crore and arresting two suspects. Every such action weakens a larger criminal network.”

According to police officials, these operations were conducted based on intelligence reports. As part of a special campaign to curb drug trafficking in the state, police teams stopped and searched suspicious vehicles, leading to the discovery of a large quantity of banned cough syrup being transported illegally.

Authorities suspect that the seized cough syrup was intended for distribution through an interstate smuggling network. The identities of the arrested suspects have not yet been disclosed, as police are interrogating them to uncover the full extent of the network involved.

A case has been registered under the relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act. During the investigation, police are attempting to trace the origin of the drug shipment and its intended destination.

Officials have stated that efforts are ongoing to identify and apprehend other individuals involved in this illegal trade. Assam police have been actively conducting operations under the state government’s “War on Drugs” campaign for several years, resulting in the seizure of large quantities of narcotics and the arrest of numerous traffickers.

Police officials assert that operations will continue based on intelligence inputs and surveillance to eradicate drug trafficking in the state.
