Mumbai, July 29: Riya Ahir, a student activist, has welcomed the Maharashtra government’s decision to withdraw cases against protesters during the student movement. Following instructions from Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, this move has been seen as a positive step, providing significant relief to the students involved in the protests.
In a recent conversation, Ahir expressed her appreciation for the government’s decision to drop the charges against students. She revealed that a case had also been filed against her on Monday, which took her by surprise.
Ahir stated that she could not understand why a case was registered against her, as she was merely fulfilling her responsibility by voicing the concerns of the students. She acknowledged that the government is now attempting to fulfill its responsibilities by deciding to withdraw the cases against the students, which she considers a relief.
She emphasized that if the needs and issues of students do not reach the government, effective reforms in the education system will not be possible. The primary goal of the student movement was to convey their demands and education-related issues to the government, ensuring that student concerns are taken into account in policy-making.
Ahir also disagreed with comments made by BJP MP Kangana Ranaut regarding the protests. She asserted that she did not use inappropriate language during the movement nor did she insult anyone. Ahir expressed confusion over the treatment she received and stated that Ranaut’s remarks were inappropriate, hurting the sentiments of students.
She further added that it is unfair to judge an entire generation based on the actions of a few individuals. Ranaut’s statement is deeply disappointing and negatively impacts the image of youth striving to express their views democratically.
