Saharanpur, August 16: The political landscape in West Bengal has intensified following the suspicious death of former Deputy Speaker Ashish Banerjee on Sunday. Congress MP Imran Masood has launched a scathing attack on the state government, claiming that a “jungle raj” has taken hold in the region.
Masood stated, “The level of murders and violence in West Bengal is alarming for the nation. A person who served as an MLA for 25 years and was a former Deputy Speaker was found hanging. A suicide note was also discovered, but whether it is genuine remains to be seen.”
He accused Trinamool Congress (TMC) activists and MPs of engaging in rampant looting. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has identified around 38 individuals for action, indicating widespread lawlessness. “A jungle raj prevails across West Bengal,” he asserted.
In response to Prime Minister Modi’s comments about “intellectual Naxals,” Masood remarked, “There are many ‘intellectual Naxals’ here spreading poison in society. By dividing people in the name of religion or caste, you are merely playing politics and not addressing national issues.”
The body of Ashish Banerjee, a prominent figure in West Bengal politics, was discovered at his office in Rampurhat, Birbhum district. The police have sent the body for autopsy, and the cause of death remains unknown. Authorities are investigating the case from all angles.
Upon learning of the incident, a large number of party workers and local residents gathered outside his office. The police have initiated an investigation at the scene. The true cause of death will be clarified only after the autopsy report and the investigation are complete.
Ashish Banerjee was a well-known name in West Bengal politics, having been elected as an MLA from the Rampurhat constituency five times. He held ministerial responsibilities in the fields of school education, agriculture, and AYUSH under the previous Mamata Banerjee government, and also served as the Deputy Speaker of the West Bengal Assembly.
