South African President Ramaphosa to Attend BRICS Summit Focused on Trade and Global South

Cape Town, September 9 (Daily Kiran) : South African President Cyril Ramaphosa is set to attend the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi on September 12-13. The announcement was made by the South African presidency on Wednesday.

The summit will focus on enhancing BRICS cooperation through people-centered development, expanding trade and investment, and strengthening financial and institutional collaboration. It will also address necessary reforms in the United Nations and international financial institutions.

This meeting comes at a critical time when ongoing conflicts in West Asia and Ukraine, along with increasing competition among major powers, pose new challenges to the global economy and the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

According to the South African presidency, Ramaphosa aims to advance his country’s diplomatic and economic interests at the summit. Key priorities include boosting trade and investment among BRICS nations, promoting industrialization and value addition, and attracting investments in African infrastructure. The discussions will align with the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) objectives.

Ramaphosa will also participate in the BRICS Business Forum Leaders Dialogue, where leaders and business representatives will discuss topics such as trade, supply chains, agriculture, women’s leadership in development, the digital economy, and innovation.

Representatives from the South African BRICS Business Council and the BRICS Women’s Business Alliance will join this forum, which aims to strengthen commercial ties and explore new opportunities for investment and economic cooperation.

A special session on “Strengthening Inclusive Global Governance and Multilateralism” will be held during the summit. This session will feature discussions with leaders from invited nations, focusing on “Resilience, Innovation, Collaboration, and Sustainability: Shaping the Future of Inclusive Global Development.”

At the conclusion of the two-day summit, the New Delhi Declaration will be adopted.

Joining Ramaphosa will be South Africa’s Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Ronald Lamola, Minister in the Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshavheni, and Deputy Minister of Trade, Industry and Competition, Zukile Godlimp.

India is hosting the 18th BRICS Summit at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi, with leaders from BRICS member countries, partner nations, and invited countries participating.

The central theme of India’s BRICS presidency is “Resilience, Innovation, Collaboration, and Sustainability,” reflecting Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s people-centered approach based on the spirit of “Humanity First.”

The summit will strengthen cooperation within BRICS on shared priorities while also facilitating exchanges on global and regional issues.

BRICS member countries include Brazil, China, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Indonesia, Iran, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, and the UAE. Partner countries include Belarus, Cuba, Bolivia, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Nigeria, Thailand, Uganda, Uzbekistan, and Vietnam.
