
New Delhi, April 14: Today, Satuwa Sankranti, also known as Satuwan, is celebrated across the country. On this day, it is customary to donate items such as water-filled pots, fans, sattu, and seasonal fruits. It is believed that making these donations brings immense merit.
Religious beliefs suggest that such acts please the deities and satisfy the souls of ancestors. Satuwa Sankranti symbolizes the onset of the summer season. According to mythology, after defeating King Bali, Lord Vishnu first consumed sattu. This is why eating and donating sattu on this day is considered extremely auspicious.
Scholars of religious texts emphasize the significance of Satuwa Sankranti in Sanatan Dharma. This day is linked to the sun’s transition into a new zodiac sign. Today, the Sun moves from Pisces to Aries. Devotees bathe in the Ganges or other sacred rivers and worship the Sun God on this occasion.
After the rituals, devotees donate sattu, water-filled pots, jaggery, and seasonal fruits such as wood apple, watermelon, muskmelon, raw mango, cucumber, and more. Donating a filled pot is said to satisfy ancestors, while donating sattu pleases the deities and absolves sins. Additionally, this day is associated with mitigating planetary defects; those with a weak moon in their horoscope can strengthen it by donating a water-filled pot.
This day is also known as Mesha Sankranti. With the sun’s transition, the period of Kharmas ends, allowing auspicious activities like marriages, sacred thread ceremonies, and other rituals to commence.
Sattu is revered not only for its spiritual significance but also for its health benefits. Consuming sattu during the summer helps maintain energy levels. Drinking sattu sherbet cools the body and alleviates heat. It is rich in fiber, which reduces internal heat and strengthens the digestive system.
According to Ayurvedic experts, drinking sattu or sattu sherbet before going out in the heat can significantly reduce the risk of heatstroke. Sattu is packed with proteins, vitamins, and minerals, helping to keep the body cool and healthy during the hot months.
