MS Dhoni Could Shine as an Impact Player, Says Mitchell McClenaghan

Chennai, April 14: The 22nd match of IPL 2026 will take place this Tuesday evening at Chepauk Stadium, featuring Chennai Super Kings (CSK) against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). A significant question looms over whether former captain MS Dhoni will take the field. If he does play, discussions are ongoing about his potential role within the team.

Speaking on Star Sports’ “Amul Cricket Live,” expert Mitchell McClenaghan suggested, “If Dhoni is fit, CSK should bring him in as an impact player. If the team management believes they need a few runs, especially while chasing, utilizing him as an impact sub would maximize his batting capabilities.”

The former New Zealand fast bowler added, “Playing as an impact player means he might not have to run much. He can simply come in, hit the ball into the stands, and finish the game. His aggressive batting will be crucial when Chennai chases big scores. I think this is a great way to get Dhoni back into rhythm. His presence will significantly strengthen CSK’s lower-order batting.”

At 44 years old, MS Dhoni has yet to play a match in IPL 2026 due to a calf injury he has been managing since before the season began.

It remains uncertain if Dhoni will play against KKR. CSK’s management is cautious and does not want to take any risks. However, his participation could positively impact the team’s leadership and batting dynamics.

Regarding the performance of both teams in IPL 2026, both CSK and KKR have had a mediocre run. After suffering three consecutive losses, CSK secured their first win by defeating Delhi Capitals in their last match at Chepauk. KKR is still seeking their first victory, currently sitting at the bottom of the points table with just one point from four matches. Their match against Punjab Kings was abandoned due to rain, resulting in both teams receiving one point. KKR will aim to secure their first win of the season against CSK on their home ground.

In their history, CSK and KKR have faced each other 32 times, with CSK winning 20 matches and KKR winning 11. One match ended without a result.
