CM Vijayan Urges Vigilance Against Caste Discrimination on Ambedkar Jayanti

Thiruvananthapuram, April 14: On Ambedkar Jayanti, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan called for the preservation of equality and social justice values in society. He emphasized that vigilance against caste discrimination is more crucial now than ever.

The Chief Minister paid tribute to Dr. B.R. Ambedkar via social media, describing him as a remarkable figure who dedicated his life to creating a caste-free society. Ambedkar’s struggle against social inequality and his thoughts continue to guide the nation today.

However, CM Vijayan expressed deep concern over recent events, particularly referencing the suspicious death of first-year BDS student Nitin Raj at a private medical college in Ancharakandi, Kannur. Allegations of caste-based harassment against Nitin Raj have sparked outrage across the state.

He stated that any incident that drives a promising student to such a situation is unforgivable. The emergence of caste discrimination in educational institutions raises questions about whether Kerala’s progressive mindset is weakening.

“This is a time for introspection,” said CM Vijayan, urging society to take collective responsibility. He also criticized the central government for failing to take concrete steps on the long-pending legislation aimed at preventing caste discrimination in educational institutions, often referred to as the ‘Rohith Vemula Act.’

He pointed out that the Supreme Court’s stay on the University Grants Commission (UGC) guidelines has created a regulatory void.

The Chief Minister appealed for unity against all forms of discrimination and hatred, asserting that embracing Ambedkar’s ideals is essential for building an equal and just society.
