New Delhi, September 13 (Daily Kiran) : Women eagerly await Hartalika Teej, a significant festival dedicated to the worship of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. This year, the celebration falls on September 14. On this day, married women pray for the long life of their husbands and the prosperity of their families. Many observe the Nirjala Vrat, a rigorous fast where they refrain from consuming water. Unmarried girls also participate in the fast, seeking their ideal life partners.
The festival’s roots trace back to the devotion of Goddess Parvati, who undertook severe penance to win Lord Shiva as her husband. This tradition commemorates her dedication and the belief that such devotion can lead to marital bliss. Women believe that by observing this fast, they can ensure the well-being of their families.
The Nirjala Vrat is particularly challenging as it involves fasting without water throughout the day. After a day of fasting, women perform rituals in the evening, honoring Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. A night vigil is also a customary practice during this festival. Women adorn themselves in new clothes and engage in the traditional sixteen adornments, which symbolize the depth of the marital bond. During the prayers, offerings of these adornments are made to Goddess Parvati, reinforcing the significance of the day.
For those participating in the rituals, the most auspicious time for worship on September 14 is between 5:00 AM and 7:06 AM. Additionally, the Brahma Muhurat from 4:32 AM to 5:19 AM is also considered favorable for prayers, along with the Abhijit Muhurat later in the day.
