Chennai, September 13 (Daily Kiran) : DMK MP A. Raja has retracted his controversial remarks aimed at Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay after facing intense criticism from leaders within the DMK-led coalition.
The controversy erupted during statewide protests organized by the DMK against the ruling TVK government. The opposition party accused Vijay and Law Minister C.T.T.R. Nirmal Kumar of disrespecting the sacrifices made by DMK leaders and those imprisoned during the Emergency. Senior DMK leaders P.K. Sekar Babu and R.S. Bharti harshly criticized the Chief Minister during protests across various regions in Tamil Nadu.
Raja’s comments regarding Vijay and Nirmal Kumar sparked a new political dispute, diverting attention from the DMK’s allegations against the government. Several officials and ministers from the TVK condemned Raja’s remarks as personal, derogatory, and unbecoming of a senior MP.
Leaders from some of the DMK’s allied parties also expressed their disagreement. Reports indicate that a faction of DMK supporters distanced themselves from Raja’s comments via social media. Manickam Tagore, president of the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee, was among those who criticized Raja’s speech, stating that personally insulting the Chief Minister and using derogatory language poses a serious threat to democratic values.
Tagore further questioned why the DMK leadership remained silent when senior party leaders repeatedly crossed the boundaries of acceptable political discourse. He emphasized that personal attacks and offensive language should not be part of expressing political dissent.
Amid rising criticism, Raja announced that he would withdraw his remarks. In a post on X, the DMK MP stated he has no hesitation in retracting his words. However, the aggressive tone from his original speech lingered in his post. He expressed regret over questioning the “identity” and “truth” of someone who deliberately mocked the identity and truth of a leader born from sacrifice.
Raja concluded his post by saying, “I have no hesitation in taking back my words. If you do not change, you will be corrected.” This incident has heightened the political clash between the ruling TVK and the opposition DMK, reigniting discussions about the declining standards of political discourse in Tamil Nadu, with leaders from all parties calling for restraint and respect in public speeches.
