Kolkata, September 13 (Daily Kiran) : The Election Commission’s recent meetings with rival factions of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) have left uncertainty regarding the party’s name and election symbol ahead of the upcoming by-elections in West Bengal. Nominations for the Nandigram and Rejinagar assembly seats are due soon, with a deadline set for September 16.
On Friday, the Commission met with the “rebel majority” faction led by Ritabrata Banerjee. Following this, they requested further clarification and documentation to support the faction’s claims. Sources indicate that this group submitted the necessary documents by Saturday evening.
An insider from the Election Commission revealed that based on the submissions from the rebel faction, a message was sent to the “original minority” faction, led by former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, seeking their opinion on the matter.
In response, Banerjee’s faction also communicated with the Commission, requesting details on the documents submitted by the rebel group.
Political analysts suggest that the future of TMC’s name and symbol remains unclear as the nomination deadline approaches. One analyst commented, “With only three days left until the deadline for submitting nominations for the Nandigram and Rejinagar by-elections, it seems unlikely that the Commission will reach a decision on the party’s name and symbol before then. Both factions may need to field candidates under a ‘free symbol’ or the symbols allocated by the Commission.”
The by-elections for Nandigram and Rejinagar are scheduled for October 6, with results to be announced on October 9. The CPI(M)-led Left Front and Congress have already named their candidates for these constituencies. Additionally, the Aam Janata Udyog Party, led by Humayun Kabir, has also announced its candidate for Rejinagar.
