New Delhi, June 14: A significant cleaning initiative for the Yamuna River took place in various areas of Delhi on Sunday, with Chief Minister Rekha Gupta actively participating. Senior officials, ministers, legislators, and MPs joined the effort, including BJP MP Kamaljeet Sahrawat, who took part at the Wazirabad Ghat.
Alongside MCD Shahdara North Zone DC Mamta Yadav and other officials, Sahrawat urged citizens not to litter in the Yamuna and to maintain its cleanliness.
In an interview, Kamaljeet Sahrawat emphasized the cultural and ecological importance of the Yamuna River for Delhi. However, she expressed concern over its pollution and dirtiness. The BJP has consistently raised alarms regarding the state of the Yamuna. Prime Minister Modi had previously stated that with public support, the river could be cleaned.
Sahrawat noted that since the BJP came to power in Delhi and Rekha Gupta became Chief Minister, there has been a focused effort on cleaning the Yamuna. “The Yamuna is tied to our emotions,” she said, encouraging BJP supporters to contribute labor for the cause.
She expressed optimism that the Delhi government’s efforts would lead to a cleaner Yamuna within one to two years. “The Yamuna is a center of devotion; thus, I urge everyone to contribute to its cleanliness, assist in labor, and support government initiatives for swift results,” she added.
Mamta Yadav, the MCD DC, stated that the cleaning drive is being conducted under the Chief Minister’s directives. The campaign is active at five locations within their zone, with over 100 staff members deployed at each site and 12 to 13 vehicles engaged in the cleaning process. Waste is being categorized into four types and removed from the riverbanks.
