Patna, September 17 (Daily Kiran) : The Bihar Police has announced a significant initiative to enhance child safety across the state. Every police station will soon feature a Child Help Desk and a dedicated Child Corner. This move aims to provide a child-friendly environment, particularly for vulnerable groups, in accordance with Section 8(5) of the Bihar Police Act, 2007, and guidelines from the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR).
According to a statement released by the Bihar Police headquarters, the Child Help Desk and Child Corner will be strategically located within each police station for easy visibility and accessibility for children and their parents. Importantly, these facilities will be kept separate from the lock-up areas. The Child Welfare Police Officer at each station will oversee operations at these centers.
Contact details, including the name, title, and mobile number of the Child Welfare Police Officer, will be prominently displayed at the Child Help Desk. Additionally, the contact information for the district Child Protection Officer will also be provided. Police headquarters has mandated that these contact numbers remain active at all times to ensure immediate assistance for children and their guardians.
To address issues specifically affecting girls, qualified female police officers will be assigned to the Child Help Desks. The police have committed to responding swiftly to complaints and requests for assistance from children and parents. Proper documentation of these complaints will be maintained to ensure timely resolution. Regular monitoring of the Child Help Desk’s operations will be conducted by the Deputy Superintendent of Police, the Special Crime Unit head, and other senior district police officials to ensure sensitive and effective policing in matters concerning children.
The deadline for establishing these Child Help Desks in every police station has been set for October 2, coinciding with Gandhi Jayanti. All relevant districts have been instructed to submit compliance reports to the Vulnerable Groups and Crime Research Department by October 5.
This initiative will ensure that each police station has a safe and dedicated support center for children, separate from lock-up facilities, along with accessible contact information for Child Welfare Officers and District Child Protection Officers. The presence of female police officers will further enhance the support available for girls, ensuring quick action on complaints and maintaining thorough records.
