Guwahati, February 16: In a significant blow to the Congress party in Assam, senior leader and former state president Bhupen Bora announced his resignation on Monday, ending a 32-year association. Bora stated that he left the party to uphold his self-respect.
Speaking to the media, Bora revealed that he submitted his resignation to the party’s central leadership around 8 AM. “I have resigned from Congress. I have already sent my resignation to the central leadership. This decision was made to protect my self-respect,” he said.
Expressing dissatisfaction with the party’s functioning, Bora criticized the leadership for failing to make timely and crucial decisions regarding organizational matters. He remarked, “The party is unable to decide who should attend its rallies and who should not.”
Bora highlighted the confusion and lack of coordination within the Congress. He emphasized that he dedicated the most significant years of his political life to the party, stating, “I have given 32 years of my life to the Congress party.”
While avoiding naming specific leaders, Bora pointed out ongoing internal issues and weaknesses in leadership, asserting that it had become difficult to remain in the party.
Despite raising concerns multiple times, he noted that he received no meaningful responses from the top leadership. “This is not a sudden decision. I have thought about it carefully,” he added.
When asked about his political future, Bora mentioned he would decide after consulting with his supporters and well-wishers. However, he clarified that his resignation is final and not a hasty decision.
Bora’s departure is seen as a significant setback for Congress in Assam, especially ahead of upcoming elections. His resignation comes at a time when the party is already grappling with internal challenges and leadership questions. Political analysts believe that Bora’s exit may lead to further turmoil within the Assam Congress unit in the coming days.
