Bastar Nears Liberation from Left-Wing Extremism as Maoist Cadre Numbers Plummet

Raipur, March 27: In a significant development for Chhattisgarh’s Bastar region, the number of armed Maoist cadres has dropped by over 5,500 in recent years. This marks a major achievement in the fight against left-wing extremism. Deputy Chief Minister and Home Minister Vijay Sharma announced that this substantial decrease brings the region closer to its goal of being completely free from Maoist influence by March 31 of this year.

Addressing the media, Sharma revealed that nearly 3,000 Maoists have surrendered recently, leading to a considerable reduction in armed cadres. Additionally, security forces have apprehended around 2,000 Maoist associates over the past two years. Collectively, these surrenders and arrests have resulted in a decrease of approximately 5,000 armed Maoists.

The Home Minister further noted that security forces have eliminated 525 Maoists in various operations. Consequently, the total reduction in armed cadres stands at 5,525.

Sharma expressed confidence that the ongoing efforts of both central and state security forces will soon liberate the entire Bastar region from Maoist violence. He praised the courage and determination displayed by the armed forces in achieving this progress.

Chief Minister Vishnu Dev Sahay also highlighted this development through a series of posts on the social media platform ‘X’. He stated that decisive governance policies have ushered in a new wave of change in Bastar.

Under the ‘Naxal Surrender and Rehabilitation Policy 2025’, over 2,800 individuals have renounced violence and returned to the mainstream. According to the Chief Minister, this demonstrates that the power of development and trust is more potent than any ideological deviation.

Sahay emphasized that with the spread of good governance, the impact of Maoism in Bastar is gradually diminishing. Once known for fear, violence, and isolation, the region is now confidently moving towards democracy, development, and trust.

He stressed that the government’s strong resolve and active public participation have laid a solid foundation for lasting peace. The Chief Minister described this transformation as a powerful example of how trust can bring about sustainable change.

Bastar, long considered a hub of Naxal activities, is now showing signs of a more peaceful future. Security officials believe that ongoing operations and rehabilitation efforts will help eliminate the Naxal problem in the coming months.
