Nainital, April 1: Villagers in Nainital, Uttarakhand, are expressing strong opposition to a proposed liquor store. They have staged protests and met with the commissioner to voice their concerns. The villagers warned that if the store opens and their demands are ignored, they will escalate their protests and movements.
The anger among residents is growing against the proposed liquor store in the Mangoli area of Khurpatal. Women took to the streets, staging a vigorous demonstration and chanting slogans against the administration. During a visit to inspect a primary school, the commissioner of Kumaon engaged in discussions with the villagers regarding the issue.
Pradhan of the village, Prema Mehra, stated that while the atmosphere in the area is currently peaceful, the opening of the liquor store could disrupt the social environment. Villagers have been protesting for several days to have the store removed, but neither the district magistrate nor any officials have visited the site. They argue that opening the liquor store not only violates regulations but also poses serious safety concerns, leading to significant anger among the residents. They have warned of a movement if the administration does not take action.
Villager Manju mentioned that the government has been urged to remove the liquor store. She noted that tenders for the liquor shops have already been issued, and a memorandum was submitted to the ADM on March 23, but no action has been taken so far. She emphasized that instead of liquor stores, they need employment opportunities. Villagers are calling for improvements in education and health facilities, and the establishment of petrol pumps to create jobs. She warned that if their demands are not met, they will launch a more aggressive protest tomorrow.
Kumaon Commissioner Deepak Rawat stated that a report on the matter has been received and discussions will be held with the excise department. He assured that actions will be taken considering the sentiments of the people.
