Kolkata, April 14: Union Home Minister Amit Shah stated on Tuesday that if the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) forms a government in West Bengal following the upcoming assembly elections, a permanent political solution will be provided for the hilly regions of Darjeeling, Kurseong, and Kalimpong, without separating them from the state.
He emphasized, “We will address the political demands of our Gorkha brothers, but the hills will not be separated from West Bengal. Our primary focus will be on the development of North Bengal, where we plan to establish four major townships.”
Shah made these remarks during an election rally in Gangarampur, located in the Uttar Dinajpur district. However, he did not clarify how this permanent solution would be achieved despite the ongoing demand for a separate Gorkhaland state.
During the rally, Shah also made several promises for the development of North Bengal, including the establishment of an IIT, an IIM, a sports university, a tribal university, an eco-adventure hub, and a 600-bed cancer hospital. He further announced that the Rajbongshi language, spoken in North Bengal, would be included in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution.
Additionally, Shah accused the Mamata Banerjee-led West Bengal government of failing to provide 600 acres of land to the Border Security Force for fencing in areas along the Bangladesh border that lack barriers.
He asserted, “If our government is formed in West Bengal this time, the BSF will receive the land within 45 days. The BJP has decided that once the new government is in place, every infiltrator in West Bengal and across the country will be expelled. These infiltrators pose a threat to national security, are taking jobs from our youth, and depriving the poor of their rights.”
