Lucknow, June 1: Ajay Rai, the President of the Uttar Pradesh Congress, has launched a scathing attack on the central government following the collapse of a bridge under construction over the Betwa River in Hamirpur, Uttar Pradesh, and a railway bridge in Anand district, Gujarat. He stated that such accidents are frequent, yet no stringent action is taken against the contractors involved. Rai also demanded compensation for the affected families.
Rai emphasized that this is not an isolated incident. Similar accidents have occurred in the past, including a bridge collapse in Varanasi, which is in the Prime Minister’s parliamentary constituency, resulting in numerous fatalities. He accused the authorities of failing to take strict action against the contractors, who were from Gujarat, while only the engineers faced jail time.
He pointed out that another tragic incident has now happened in Hamirpur, with no arrests made and the contractor’s whereabouts unknown. He recalled the Morbi incident, where no accountability was established. Rai alleged that the government is indulging in corruption by favoring contractors from Gujarat, while the public continues to suffer.
He demanded immediate compensation of one crore rupees for the families of the deceased and at least fifty lakh rupees for the injured.
Rai also questioned the law and order situation in the state, citing a spate of recent murders in Ghaziabad, including those of a fruit vendor, a young man named Surya, BJP youth wing leader Vinit Rai, and Paralympian Chirag Tyagi.
He stated that these incidents indicate a complete breakdown of law and order in the state, which has now descended into lawlessness. The government, he claimed, is merely making empty promises while violence continues unabated.
Rai criticized Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, suggesting that if he cannot maintain law and order, he should resign and return to Gorakhpur.
Additionally, he responded to the alleged attack on TMC leader Abhishek Banerjee in West Bengal, asserting that violence in a democracy is unacceptable. He condemned the incident and stressed the need for ensuring the safety of all political leaders, regardless of their differences.
