A Dark Chapter for Democracy: Sanjay Gupta Reflects on the Emergency Imposed by Indira Gandhi

Patna, June 26: On the occasion of ‘Constitution Martyr Day’, BJP legislator Sanjay Gupta remarked that the freedom fighters who liberated the nation witnessed a dark turn 51 years ago. Former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, driven by a thirst for power, imposed a state of emergency. During this period, political and social activists faced oppression and were imprisoned under a dictatorial regime.

Gupta emphasized that this was not a matter of national security or foreign invasion. The emergency was declared to preserve power following a ruling by the Allahabad High Court regarding Indira Gandhi’s election. This emergency, rooted in power greed and unethical motives, led to the imprisonment and torture of many citizens.

He stated that fundamental rights were violated during this time. Individuals were jailed without due process and were denied the right to approach the courts. This marked a dark chapter for democracy. We remember this event today to ensure that such a situation does not recur and to safeguard our democratic values.

Gupta also commented on the Bharat Tiwari encounter case, noting the swift actions taken by the government led by Samrat Chaudhary. A judicial inquiry has been announced, and the involved police officers have been suspended. He assured that the truth would emerge following the investigation.

In response to Kashi Nath Tiwari’s statement about taking to the streets if justice is not served within three days, Gupta affirmed the government’s commitment to delivering justice. He stated that the ongoing actions are being closely monitored, and the government is ensuring a fair investigation.

Regarding Leader of Opposition Tejashwi Yadav’s comments, Gupta advised those living in glass houses not to throw stones. He criticized Yadav’s remarks, stating that the kind of governance he previously led does not exist in the NDA. The NDA government operates on principles of justice, development, and good governance, with a zero-tolerance policy in place.
