Womens Reservation Bill: A Step Towards Inclusive Democracy, Says Lucknow Mayor Sushma Kharkwal

Lucknow, April 9: The Women’s Reservation Bill has been hailed by Lucknow Mayor Sushma Kharkwal as a crucial step for women’s empowerment and an inclusive democracy. She emphasized that women are set to gain significant representation in politics, which will strengthen the nation’s democratic framework.

Kharkwal praised Prime Minister Modi, noting that when he entered central politics in 2014, he promised to introduce the Women’s Reservation Bill. “Today, he has fulfilled that promise. I extend my heartfelt congratulations and best wishes to him on behalf of all women,” she stated.

She further highlighted that the Prime Minister has kept nearly all his promises to the public. Citing examples, Kharkwal mentioned that under the Jan Dhan scheme, bank accounts were opened in women’s names, women were designated as heads on ration cards, and housing schemes provided homes registered under women’s names. Additionally, gas connections have also been issued in women’s names. “These initiatives are vital for making women self-reliant,” she added.

The Lucknow Mayor referred to initiatives like ‘Nari Shakti Vandan’, stating that the Prime Minister has recently called for cooperation from the opposition in his blog. She asserted that the Women’s Reservation Bill will make democracy even more inclusive and robust. While women are advancing in various fields, their political participation remains low, which this bill aims to address. Since 2014, women have been consistently honored and given opportunities. “Today, we have a female President, a female Governor of Uttar Pradesh, and I am the Mayor of Lucknow. No previous Prime Minister has accorded such respect to women,” she remarked.

Kharkwal commended women’s management skills, saying that just as they handle household budgets and pay attention to every detail, they can also effectively manage society and administration. “I manage my municipal corporation as I would my home; similarly, women perform better when given responsibilities. All political parties should support this bill. Women exist in opposition households too, and they deserve respect. The honor of women in India is paramount,” she concluded.
