
Patna, April 1: Wheat procurement for the Rabi marketing season 2026-27 commenced in Bihar on Wednesday. The state’s Cooperation Minister, Pramod Kumar, inaugurated the wheat procurement process at a PACS (Primary Agricultural Credit Society) in Jehanabad.
During the event, the minister emphasized the government’s commitment to ensuring farmers receive the minimum support price for their produce. The procurement will be conducted through PACS and trade associations across the state. Farmers will receive the minimum support price for their wheat within 48 hours of sale, directly deposited into their designated accounts.
Farmers are encouraged to sell their wheat without relying on intermediaries. The procurement process will continue until June 15, managed by PACS, trade associations, and the central agency, the Food Corporation of India (FCI). The government has set the minimum support price for wheat at ₹2,585 per quintal, which is ₹160 higher than last year.
This year, the total wheat procurement target for the state is set at 0.18 lakh metric tons. PACS at the village level and trade associations at the block level have been authorized for procurement. The FCI is also authorized to procure in designated blocks within the state. On the first day, a total of 303.6 metric tons of wheat were procured across various districts, including 78.6 metric tons in Aurangabad, 27.5 metric tons in Samastipur, and 30.8 metric tons in Siwan.
It is noteworthy that during the Kharif marketing season 2025-26, the state achieved 99.84% of its rice procurement target, with a total of 36.79 lakh metric tons procured against a target of 36.85 lakh metric tons. The highest procurement was recorded in Rohtas district at 3,28,977 metric tons, followed by Kaimur with 2,34,383 metric tons, and Aurangabad with 1,80,902 metric tons. On average, 67.61 quintals of rice were procured from each farmer this year.
