Patna, August 31: The Janata Dal (United) has announced a state-wide awareness campaign regarding the Farakka Water Treaty. The party revealed that the initiative will feature the ‘Nitish Dialogue on Farakka Water Treaty,’ where JDU’s National Executive President Sanjay Kumar Jha and State President Umesh Singh Kushwaha will engage with citizens across various districts in Bihar.
According to JDU, the campaign will cover 12 districts in the state. The party emphasizes the need to educate the public about the long-standing adverse effects of the Farakka Barrage and the treaty on Bihar.
JDU claims that the Farakka Barrage has led to significant sedimentation in the Ganges, raising the riverbed. This has exacerbated flooding issues in North Bihar during the monsoon while causing water scarcity in several regions during the summer.
The party argues that the Farakka Water Treaty has resulted in insufficient water supply for irrigation, drinking, and developmental projects in Bihar. They also noted that the treaty, established in 1996, is set to expire in December 2026, urging that Bihar’s interests and water needs until 2050 should be prioritized before any renewal.
JDU leaders stated that the campaign aims to raise awareness among farmers, citizens, and various communities on this critical issue, seeking their opinions as well. The goal is to transform this topic into a widespread public discussion.
The first phase of the program will commence on September 5 in Buxar, taking place at the Bagicha Utsav Marriage Lawn on Central Jail Road. Events are also scheduled for Bhojpur on September 6, and Khagaria on September 9.
Following the initial phase, dialogue programs will be organized in other districts of the state.
