West Bengals Healthcare System Criticized by CM Suvendu Adhikari

Kolkata, July 1: On National Doctors’ Day, West Bengal leader Suvendu Adhikari launched a sharp attack on the previous Trinamool Congress (TMC) government led by Mamata Banerjee. He accused the TMC administration of completely ruining the state’s healthcare system.

During an event at Bidhannagar Hospital in the northern suburbs of Kolkata, the Chief Minister stated that the massive wastage during the previous government is evident in every sector, particularly in healthcare.

He remarked, “After taking office in 1977, the late Jyoti Basu mentioned an interesting fact about the second Chief Minister of West Bengal, the late Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy, on his birthday, which is celebrated as National Doctors’ Day. Basu noted that any developmental work he wanted to initiate had already been started by Dr. Roy. Now, as Chief Minister, I can see the devastation caused by the previous TMC government in every area I work in.”

Adhikari further emphasized that the healthcare system was entirely neglected during Mamata Banerjee’s previous tenure.

He stated, “The disregard for the medical system in Bengal was unacceptable. However, I must move forward amidst all this and ensure that the state’s healthcare system is free from political interference. The healthcare system cannot function in an environment of nepotism and bias.”

According to the Chief Minister, those who believe in God also recognize that God resides in every human being, and thus serving humanity is akin to serving God.

Suvendu Adhikari added, “Swami Vivekananda once advised us to serve humanity as a form of serving God. Therefore, we must improve the healthcare system in West Bengal and elevate it to new heights. The highest number of patients in major hospitals across other states come from West Bengal. Why should this be the case? Why shouldn’t West Bengal have adequate medical facilities?”

He noted, “Unnecessary political interference has severely deteriorated the state’s healthcare system. This situation is even more tragic considering that the people of West Bengal can outshine not only other Indian states but also some of the most developed countries in terms of talent.”

He also mentioned that to ensure a better healthcare system in the state, the first step taken by his newly formed government was to implement the Ayushman Bharat scheme in West Bengal, a move that the previous government had failed to execute.
