Patna, July 18: Bihar’s Governor and Chancellor, Lieutenant General (Retd) Syed Ata Hasnain, held an interactive session with students and faculty at Veer Kunwar Singh University in Ara on Friday. The event aimed to gather direct suggestions from students and teachers regarding issues related to higher education and to understand their experiences to strengthen the state’s higher education system.
In his address, the Governor emphasized that real reforms in higher education can only occur when the problems, suggestions, and experiences of students and teachers are the foundation of policy-making. He highlighted that several policy reforms, new regulations, and administrative initiatives are being implemented in Bihar’s higher education sector, which are expected to significantly improve the quality of education in the future.
He noted Bihar’s rich academic and intellectual tradition, stating that the state has produced numerous scholars and capable leaders. There is now a need for Bihar’s universities to evolve into centers of academic excellence. The Governor expressed confidence that the state government and Raj Bhavan are fully committed to ensuring that students have access to quality higher education within the state.
The Governor urged students not to limit their focus to the curriculum alone. He encouraged them to also pay equal attention to sports, personality development, communication skills, and general knowledge. He remarked that today’s world is driven by a knowledge-based economy, where digital technology and the internet have significantly expanded learning opportunities. Sharing his own experiences, he stated that the learning process is lifelong, and everyone should continuously seek knowledge.
During the dialogue session, students raised demands for regular startup expos at universities, promotion of industry department schemes, expansion of modern laboratories, libraries, hostels, recruitment of technical staff, and prompt filling of vacant teaching positions. In response, the Governor assured that the development of infrastructure would be carried out in phases, and necessary appointments would be made following the implementation of the new university act.
Teachers also brought up issues such as NAAC accreditation, lack of financial resources, digital libraries, ICT and language labs, health facilities, timely salary and pension payments, research facilities, and placement cells. The Governor assured that providing timely salaries and pensions to teachers and staff is among his top priorities. He also mentioned that he would seriously consider proposals for group health insurance schemes and grants for research projects.
