Kolkata, August 31: West Bengal police have detained three individuals, including relatives of the fugitive stone quarry owner Tulu Mandal, in Birbhum. Authorities recovered a significant amount of foreign currency and cash from their vehicle. An official reported that a raid was conducted at Tulu’s in-laws’ residence based on intelligence received on Monday.
Tulu remains at large, facing allegations of holding unaccounted money, possession of a large quantity of gold from a relative’s home, and organized crime. Several of his relatives and acquaintances have already been arrested. His name resurfaced following an incident in Bolpur on Monday.
According to police sources, a raid was carried out on Mahidapur Road in Bolpur after receiving a tip-off. A four-wheeler was stopped and searched, leading to the discovery of cash and foreign currency. A police officer confirmed that currencies from West Asian countries were found, although the total amount has yet to be verified.
Three individuals were in the car, including Shanto Sheikh, who is the brother-in-law of Tulu’s relative Mintu Sheikh. Police suspect that the recovered money belongs to Tulu’s relative, linking him back to the case.
Investigators are probing the source of the money and its intended destination. Meanwhile, a police team has conducted raids at the homes of Tulu’s in-laws in Parui, Birbhum.
It is noteworthy that Tulu had approached the Calcutta High Court seeking protection during the investigation, but Justice Sougata Bhattacharya’s bench dismissed his petition and refused to intervene in the inquiry. Following this, police have expanded the scope of their investigation. A ‘Red Corner’ notice has already been issued against him.
Recently, police recovered ₹28.5 crore in cash and approximately 15 kilograms of gold from the home of Tulu’s relative, Minar Mandal, in Deucha village under the Mohammad Bazaar police station in Birbhum. Since then, investigators have intensified raids on several locations linked to him.
