Kolkata, August 31: A special ‘Station Festival’ was held on Monday at the renowned Howrah Railway Station, following directives from the Ministry of Railways. This event aimed to honor the rich heritage, historical significance, and glorious history of India’s prestigious railway stations.
Howrah Station is considered one of the most historic railway stations in India. On August 15, 1854, Joshua Greenbow operated the first train from Howrah to Hooghly, which at that time featured only a temporary tin shed, a small booking office, and a narrow platform.
Today, Howrah Station has transformed into a massive railway hub with 24 platforms. It operates approximately 252 mail and express trains and 500 EMU trains daily, accommodating over 1 million passengers each day. The station played a crucial role during the freedom struggle, facilitating access for freedom fighters across various regions.
The festival was led by Vishal Kapoor, the Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) of Howrah Division. Numerous cultural and heritage-based programs were organized for passengers, railway staff, and the general public during this event.
The activities took place under the famous ‘Boro Ghari’ (Big Clock) located in the old premises of the station, which is recognized as a symbol of the station and celebrated its 100th anniversary this year.
In his address, Vishal Kapoor highlighted the glorious history of Howrah Station, its role in the development of Indian Railways, and the importance of preserving railway heritage for future generations. He noted that Howrah Station has significantly contributed to the region’s economic development.
The festival featured street plays, vibrant cultural performances, and dance programs. Members of the Bharat Scouts and Guides also conducted a flag march in the historic premises.
A special highlight of the event was the launch of helium balloons dedicated to the Station Festival, symbolizing the continuous progress, aspirations, and developmental journey of the Howrah Division, while also reflecting its deep connection to historical heritage.
Additionally, a special heritage gallery was inaugurated, showcasing the historical journey of Howrah Station and the Howrah Division. The gallery features rare photographs, historical documents, display materials, and model trains that narrate the story of the development of Indian Railways and the transformation of Howrah Station.
According to railway officials, this heritage gallery will be open to the public for the next three days, providing an opportunity for passengers, railway enthusiasts, and visitors to closely explore and understand the rich heritage of Howrah Station.
