Kolkata, August 31: A shocking incident has emerged from the Pandaveswar area of Durgapur in West Bengal‘s Paschim Bardhaman district, where a man was allegedly murdered by his wife and brother-in-law. Police reported the incident on Monday.
The victim has been identified as Sheikh Hasmat, 44, a resident of Birbhum district who frequently visited Durgapur for work. Family sources indicate that Hasmat had been staying at his in-laws’ home in Mahal village for the past few days.
Reports suggest that on Sunday night, as Hasmat sat down for dinner, he was suddenly attacked. It is alleged that the assailants used a hammer, an axe, and an iron rod during the assault.
Hasmat was rushed to the Durgapur sub-district hospital with severe injuries, where he succumbed to his wounds. As of now, no arrests have been made in connection with the case.
Family members of the deceased claim that Hasmat’s wife conspired with her brother to carry out the murder due to greed for property. The incident has created a tense atmosphere in the Mahal area, sparking discussions among locals.
Upon receiving the information, police from the Pandaveswar station arrived at the scene and initiated an investigation. The body has been sent for post-mortem to Asansol District Hospital.
According to police, a complaint has been filed, and an investigation is underway. An officer from the Asansol-Durgapur Police Commissionerate stated that while the victim’s family has accused the wife of murder, a formal written complaint was not submitted initially.
The officer added, “Some items have been recovered from the crime scene. The cause of death will be clarified once the post-mortem report is available.”
Meanwhile, Hasmat’s elder brother, Sheikh Milan, has held his sister-in-law responsible for his brother’s death. He alleged that while Hasmat was eating, his wife and brother-in-law attacked him with sharp weapons. Milan described how the accused brutally beat Hasmat with a spade, shovel, axe, and hammer.
He demanded strict action against the perpetrators, emphasizing the need for justice. Following the incident, the Mahal village area remains tense, with local residents and neighbors expressing shock and calling for a fair investigation.
