West Bengal Election Counting to Be Transparent and Secure, Says Chief Electoral Officer

Kolkata, May 4: Ahead of the assembly election results in West Bengal, Chief Electoral Officer Manoj Kumar Agarwal provided detailed preparations on Sunday. He assured that the counting process would be conducted in a completely transparent and secure manner. The counting of votes will commence at 8 AM on Monday, he announced during a press conference.

Agarwal stated, “The state has a total of 294 assembly seats, with counting for 293 seats taking place simultaneously. The election for the Falta assembly seat will be held on the 21st.” A total of 77 counting centers have been established across the state, with 35 located in district headquarters and 42 in sub-divisional headquarters. He clarified that according to the guidelines of the Election Commission of India, the maximum counting centers are set up at the district level. However, where necessary infrastructure is lacking, centers are also established at the sub-divisional level.

The Chief Electoral Officer mentioned, “A total of 533 observers have been appointed to monitor the counting process. This includes 293 counting observers, 163 additional counting observers, and 77 police observers. All officials have received special training to minimize the possibility of any discrepancies during the counting.”

Regarding the announcement of results, Agarwal noted, “The results will be available on both the official website of the Election Commission of India and the state election office’s website. As soon as the Form-20 process is completed, the results will be declared and shared through the media center. Additionally, updates will be continuously available via television, the internet, ECI Net, and the websites of the relevant returning officers.”

On the arrangements for counting, he explained, “Each table will be equipped with an EVM machine, where one counting observer and one assistant will be stationed. Furthermore, a counting agent and a micro-observer will be present at a separate table. To ensure transparency at every table, micro-observers, assistants, and supervisors will be deployed. Additionally, for security reasons, wire mesh will be installed around the tables.”

He reassured that the entire counting process would be conducted fairly, securely, and transparently, maintaining public trust in the democratic process.
