Washington Commanders Prepare for NFL Draft with Local Talent

Washington, April 7: The Washington Commanders are gearing up for the 2026 NFL Draft, which is just around the corner. This month is crucial for all 32 NFL teams as they host potential draftees at their facilities. The Commanders are set to welcome several top prospects, including Sonny Styles, Carnell Tate, and Makai Lemon.

However, not every visit is classified as an official top-30 visit. This applies to USC safety Bishop Fitzgerald, a product of Gar-Field High School in Prince William County, Virginia. Standing at 5 feet 11 inches and weighing 201 pounds, Fitzgerald is a promising safety prospect. According to Grant Paulsen from 106.7 The Fan in Washington, D.C., Fitzgerald will be in Ashburn on Wednesday for a workout and interview with the Commanders. It remains uncertain whether this is a top-30 visit, but it does not appear to be one.

Fitzgerald, a native of Woodbridge, is eager to be selected within the top 100 picks. It would be a remarkable story if he were to join the Commanders.

Fitzgerald began his collegiate journey at Coffeyville Community College in Kansas, where he played for two seasons before transferring to North Carolina State. During his time with the Wolfpack, he became a key defensive player, participating in 26 games with 16 starts. He recorded 97 tackles, including 7.5 tackles for loss, five interceptions, and 11 pass breakups.

In 2025, Fitzgerald was a sought-after player in the transfer portal and ultimately signed with the USC Trojans. He continued to excel last season, finishing with 51 tackles, including 2.5 for loss, one sack, five interceptions, and three pass breakups. His outstanding senior year earned him All-American and first-team All-Big Ten honors.

At the 2026 NFL Combine, Fitzgerald clocked a 40-yard dash time of 4.55 seconds and is recognized for his playmaking ability. This is a skill set that the Commanders desperately need. Additionally, Fitzgerald is a capable run defender, making him a strong candidate for the Commanders’ third-round pick, which is No. 71 overall.
