Virat Kohlis Decision to Step Back from Test Cricket Supported by Ravichandran Ashwin

New Delhi, May 17: Virat Kohli recently opened up about his decision to step back from Test cricket during a podcast. He discussed the pressures that influenced his choice. Kohli mentioned that after playing cricket for so long, the pressure to prove his worth in every match became overwhelming, leading him to retire from Test cricket. Former cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin has expressed his support for Kohli’s stance.

On his YouTube channel, Ashwin stated, “Kohli said in the podcast that he doesn’t need to prove his work to anyone. This is absolutely correct. I felt the same way. After so many years of playing and winning matches for India, who does Kohli need to prove anything to?”

Ashwin added, “There comes a point in a cricketer’s career when external validation or approval stops mattering. What people say from the outside is their business. When you are young, there is often a strong desire to say, ‘I will prove you wrong.’ But wisdom comes when you realize that the fight is not with others, but with yourself. The moment you understand this, life becomes much easier. I believe Kohli has reached that stage. Letting go of regrets is not easy.”

Kohli also mentioned in the podcast that being placed in situations where he felt compelled to prove his worth repeatedly had a negative impact on him. He expressed, “You can either tell me from day one that I am not that good or that I am not needed. If I feel that I constantly have to prove my abilities and importance, I cannot thrive in that environment.”

At this stage in his career, Kohli feels no need for approval or to silence critics.
