Vice President Unveils Book on VIP Culture in India

New Delhi, June 24: Vice President C.P. Radhakrishnan unveiled the book titled “VIP Culture in India: Power, Privilege, and the Distance from Democracy” at the Vice President’s residence in New Delhi on Wednesday. He noted that the book, authored by former Rajya Sabha MP from Arunachal Pradesh Nabam Rebia and co-author Sandeep Kumar, addresses the core of democratic governance and public life in India.

The Vice President emphasized that the Constitution envisions a society based on justice, equality, freedom, and brotherhood. He highlighted that the essence of democracy lies in the relationship between citizens and those in public authority. He asserted that democracy thrives when public office is viewed as a responsibility rather than a privilege.

Referring to the great Tamil saint-poet Thiruvalluvar, Radhakrishnan stated that true leadership is recognized through accessibility, compassion, and accountability. He remarked that leaders who remain approachable and respectful towards the public earn lasting trust and admiration.

He pointed out that the themes discussed in the book align with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision, which regards public office as a means of service rather than privilege. Citing the Prime Minister’s decision to abolish red beacons for VIPs and his recent actions to alleviate traffic disruptions for NEET candidates, the Vice President illustrated these as examples of citizen-centric governance. He recalled the Prime Minister’s words that every Indian is special and a VIP, asserting that service is the highest duty.

Radhakrishnan praised the book for highlighting the simplicity and spirit of public service exemplified by former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri and other distinguished figures. He noted that the authors enriched their analysis with references from India’s civilizational and intellectual traditions, including the Upanishads, Ramcharitmanas, teachings of Buddha, and Panchatantra.

The Vice President called for a renewed commitment to the values that define the Republic, emphasizing equality before the law, the dignity of every citizen, and public service inspired by humility and responsibility. He concluded that the true measure of leadership lies in the trust it earns and the service it provides for the public good.

Attendees at the event included former Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Nabam Tuki, former Rajya Sabha MP from Meghalaya W.R. Kharlukhie, author Nabam Rebia, and co-author Sandeep Kumar.
