Ranchi, June 26: Santosh Kumar Gangwar, the Governor of Jharkhand and Chancellor of the state’s universities, stated on Friday that the true measure of success in agricultural research should not be the number of research papers published, but rather the increase in farmers’ income, resolution of their issues, and the positive changes in their lives.
He urged scientists to effectively implement the ‘Lab to Land’ concept. Speaking at the 46th foundation day ceremony of Birsa Agricultural University (BAU) in Ranchi, Governor Gangwar emphasized that technologies developed in laboratories become meaningful only when they benefit the fields.
He noted that the stronger the dialogue between universities and farmers, the faster agricultural development will progress. Birsa Agricultural University is not just an educational institution; it is a vital center for the hopes, aspirations, and rural development of Jharkhand’s farmers. Since its establishment, the university has played a significant role in bringing positive changes to farmers’ lives through education, research, and agricultural extension programs.
The Governor further pointed out that a large portion of Jharkhand’s population relies on agriculture and related sectors. Given the changing climate scenario, the development of environmentally friendly technologies in organic farming, millets, horticulture, animal husbandry, fisheries, and water conservation is essential. Agricultural universities are responsible not only for granting degrees but also for fostering innovation, agricultural entrepreneurship, and improving farmers’ living standards.
Identifying himself as someone connected to a farming family, the Governor expressed his understanding of the problems and expectations of farmers. He highlighted the immense potential in horticulture, forestry, animal husbandry, fisheries, and silk production in Jharkhand, urging for research, value addition, and modern marketing systems in these areas. Agriculture should be viewed not just as a means of livelihood but also as a pathway to entrepreneurship and prosperity.
Addressing the students, the Governor mentioned that agricultural education today offers new opportunities in startups, food processing, and job creation. He encouraged students to aspire to be job creators rather than job seekers. The Governor expressed confidence that Birsa Agricultural University will establish its distinct identity among the leading agricultural universities in the country by its golden jubilee.
