Vande Bharat Sleeper Trains Set to Launch in July with 160 Kmph Speed and World-Class Amenities

New Delhi – Indian Railways is gearing up for a transformative leap in passenger travel with the launch of the first Vande Bharat Sleeper train by the end of July 2025. Designed for high-speed overnight journeys, the new sleeper variant of the Vande Bharat Express promises both speed and luxury, redefining long-distance rail travel in India. The semi-high-speed train will operate at 160 kmph, offering a premium experience similar to top international train services.

Vande Bharat Sleeper
: Next-Gen Comfort at High Speed

Currently, Indian trains like the Rajdhani, Shatabdi, and Vande Bharat (chair car version) operate at a maximum speed of 130 kmph. The upcoming sleeper version is being designed to reach speeds between 160 to 240 kmph, beginning with a top speed of 160 kmph. According to senior railway officials, the first trial run has been successfully completed, and the train has cleared all technical and speed checks conducted by the Research Design and Standards Organization (RDSO), Lucknow.

The sleeper trains will feature state-of-the-art technology, enhanced safety systems, and world-class interiors to offer a comfortable overnight travel experience for passengers. These trains are part of the government’s broader push to modernize India’s railway infrastructure and expand high-speed travel options.

Launch and Flag-Off Expected in July

Sources suggest that Prime Minister Narendra Modi may flag off the first Vande Bharat Sleeper train next month. The Railway Board is currently finalizing the route and fare structure, with the initial routes likely to include Delhi–Howrah and Delhi–Mumbai, two of the busiest and most strategic railway corridors in the country.

These routes are already undergoing major upgrades, including the installation of anti-collision technology, advanced signaling systems, and modern track infrastructure to support higher speeds and enhanced safety.

Production in Full Swing

In the financial year 2025–26, Indian Railways aims to introduce 30 Vande Bharat Sleeper trains across its network. Of these, 10 trains have already been manufactured at the Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML) facility in Bengaluru, while an additional 8 to 10 trains are under production at the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai.

Both BEML and ICF are working jointly to deliver the coaches for the sleeper trains, with deliveries expected in phases throughout the year following the initial launch.

A Milestone in Indian Railways Modernization

The Vande Bharat Sleeper project is seen as a crucial component of India’s long-term rail modernization vision. With cutting-edge amenities, faster travel times, and improved safety, these trains are expected to significantly reduce journey durations on major long-distance routes, offer better overnight comfort, and reduce dependence on airlines for intercity travel.

This move also aligns with India’s ambition to create a world-class transportation ecosystem that rivals global standards, while maintaining affordability for the common traveler.
