Panama City, June 23: India’s Ambassador to Panama, Sumit Seth, represented the country at the opening session of the 56th Organization of American States (OAS) General Assembly.
Ambassador Seth congratulated Panama’s President, José Raúl Mulino, on his leadership and extended his best wishes for the success of the event.
The 56th OAS General Assembly is being held from June 22 to 24 in Panama City. This marks the third time Panama has hosted the assembly, having previously done so in 1996 and 2007.
The Indian Embassy in Panama shared on ‘X’ that Ambassador Sumit Seth represented India at the opening session of the assembly. India serves as a permanent observer to the Organization of American States.
The post noted, “The Ambassador congratulated President José Raúl Mulino on his leadership and wished for the success of the event.”
The General Assembly is the most significant body of the OAS, comprising delegations from all member countries, typically led by foreign ministers.
Each member state holds one vote, with decisions generally made by a majority. However, some matters require a two-thirds majority. The OAS tradition emphasizes passing resolutions by consensus.
The assembly determines the policies and priorities of the OAS and outlines the structure and functions of its various bodies.
Additionally, it elects members of the OAS’s autonomous and decentralized institutions, including the Inter-American Court of Human Rights, the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights, the Inter-American Juridical Committee, the Justice Studies Center of the Americas, and the Administrative Tribunal.
