Kolkata, June 23: West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced on Tuesday that a new and stringent anti-corruption bill will be presented in the state assembly on June 25, the final day of the ongoing budget session.
While participating in the debate on the budget proposals presented by the state’s Finance Minister, Swapan Dasgupta, Adhikari stated that once the new law is enacted, not only will offenders face imprisonment, but assets acquired through corrupt means will also be confiscated and auctioned off.
During his address, the Chief Minister reiterated the state government’s commitment to a zero-tolerance policy towards corruption. He warned, “Many may think they will spend two months in jail and then be released after a legal battle. They should remember that this time we will seize their assets. We will auction those properties.”
Adhikari also indirectly targeted former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Trinamool Congress (TMC) General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee, without naming them directly.
He referred to various controversial properties in Kolkata’s Kalighat area and in the South 24 Parganas district, which are allegedly linked to different family members of Mamata Banerjee.
The Chief Minister stated, “We will ensure that those living under flyovers in Kolkata are accommodated in palatial homes on Harish Chatterjee Street and Harish Mukherjee Road in South Kolkata, as well as in Amatala in South 24 Parganas.”
In his speech, Adhikari also emphasized that there will be no discrimination in government job recruitment moving forward, and the entire hiring process will be conducted transparently.
He added, “No politician will be involved in the recruitment process. All state recruitments will follow the model used by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) for central government hiring.”
