Political Turmoil in Maharashtra Over Uniform Civil Code Support

Mumbai, June 23: The political landscape in Maharashtra is heating up regarding the Uniform Civil Code (UCC). State ministers and leaders from the Shiv Sena have voiced their opinions on this contentious issue. Minister Nitesh Rane has taken a clear stance in favor of the UCC, describing it as an integral part of the Constitution. Meanwhile, Minister Jaykumar Rawal stated that there is currently no discussion on the matter in Maharashtra, but the government will study experiences from other states.

On the other hand, Shiv Sena spokesperson Sanjay Nirupam has also expressed support for the UCC, making strong remarks regarding the Muslim Personal Law Board. Minister Nitesh Rane emphasized that the UCC is mentioned in the Constitution. He stated that anyone who believes in the Constitution, particularly Dr. B.R. Ambedkar’s vision, must accept the UCC. He added that those advocating for Sharia law can go to places where it is practiced, as India adheres to its Constitution, which includes the UCC.

Sanjay Nirupam reiterated that the UCC is not intended to undermine any religion. He warned that if the Muslim Personal Law Board attempts to incite the public, it will not go unpunished. Nirupam affirmed that while the Board has the freedom to conduct its religious affairs, any attempts to provoke communal unrest under the guise of religion will be dealt with severely by the government and police.

Minister Jaykumar Rawal mentioned that there is no ongoing discussion about the UCC in the state. However, he noted that if other states implement the UCC in the interest of the nation, the Maharashtra government will analyze and evaluate it. He concluded that if the UCC is found to be beneficial for Maharashtra and the country, the state government will certainly consider its implementation.
