Uttarkashis Kashi Vishwanath Temple: A Cultural Gem Celebrated by CM Dhami

Uttarkashi, June 1: Nestled along the sacred banks of the Ganges in Uttarakhand, the Kashi Vishwanath Temple has long been a revered site for sages and devotees alike. This ancient temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva, stands as a significant cultural heritage of Uttarkashi.

On Monday, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami took to social media to highlight the temple’s grandeur. Sharing a video on the platform X, he remarked, “The Kashi Vishwanath Temple in Uttarkashi is a highly sacred and prominent center for the worship of Lord Shiva. This shrine symbolizes faith, devotion, and eternal culture. Here, devotees experience spiritual peace, energy, and divine sensations. Make sure to visit this holy temple during your trip to Uttarkashi.”

Located on the banks of the Bhagirathi River, the Kashi Vishwanath Temple is one of the oldest and most revered Shiva temples in the region, often referred to as the ‘Kashi of the North.’ Its spiritual significance is considered comparable to that of Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh. It is believed that Lord Vishwanath resides here, granting liberation to his devotees.

This majestic temple not only represents Uttarkashi’s cultural legacy but also serves as a vibrant center for the faith of pilgrims undertaking the Char Dham Yatra.

According to tradition, the temple was originally established by Sage Parshuram, with its reconstruction occurring in 1857 under the reign of Maharani Khaneti Devi of the Tehri state, who built it atop the ancient altar.

Inside the temple’s sanctum, the Shiva Lingam is regarded as self-manifested and intriguingly tilts slightly towards the south. The temple courtyard features a towering ancient trident, approximately 115 feet high, inscribed with Brahmi script. Mythologically, this trident is said to have been used by the gods during the Devasura conflict.
