Ujjain, June 22: The Mahakaleshwar Temple witnessed a significant turnout of devotees on Monday for the Bhasma Aarti of Baba Mahakal, celebrated on the eighth day of the Shukla Paksha in Jyeshtha. Devotees began lining up late at night to seek blessings from Baba Mahakal.
Early Monday morning, after receiving the command from Lord Veerabhadra, the temple doors were opened with the sound of drums and trumpets. As the devotees caught their first glimpse of Baba Mahakal following the divine adornment and Bhasma Aarti, the air resonated with chants of “Jai Shri Mahakal.” The temple complex was filled with the sounds of bells, conch shells, and recitations of mantras.
With the opening of the temple gates, the sacred water was poured over Lord Mahakal, followed by an abhishekam with Panchamrit made from milk, yogurt, ghee, sugar, and fruit juices. Baba Mahakal was adorned with Tripund and Trinetra, and a garland of Ram’s name was placed on his head, covered in sacred ash.
The temple priests conducted the grand Aarti, and a large number of devotees were present to witness the Bhasma Aarti. Many had queued since the previous night to have a glimpse of their revered deity.
Traditionally, the ashes from cremation grounds were offered to Mahakal, but now, a special ash made from the dung of the Kapila cow and medicinal herbs is used. During the Bhasma Aarti, it is mandatory for men to wear traditional dhoti-sola and women to wear sarees.
The Bhasma Aarti of Baba Mahakal is renowned across the country and attracts both the general public and prominent personalities. To maintain order during this event, a significant number of police personnel are deployed around the temple.
Notably, television actors Saurabh Raj Jain and Arpit Ranka visited the Mahakaleshwar Temple during the Bhasma Aarti to pray for the success of their upcoming show.
