Remembering Sundar Singh Bhandari: A Tribute to His Resilience and Dedication

New Delhi, June 22: The nation pays tribute to Sundar Singh Bhandari, a founding member of the Janata Party and a prominent nationalist thinker, on his death anniversary. On this occasion, Union Home Minister Amit Shah recalled Bhandari’s struggles and emphasized that his commitment to uphold democratic values during the Emergency serves as an inspiration for all.

In a post on the social media platform X, Amit Shah wrote, “On the death anniversary of Sundar Singh Bhandari, a founding member of the Janata Party and a fervent nationalist thinker, I pay my humble respects. Bhandari played a crucial role in drafting the BJP’s constitution. He was a craftsman of the organization, nurturing the talents of individuals, society, and the organization. His struggle to protect democracy during the Emergency and his unwavering principles in adverse conditions inspire us all.”

Amit Shah also shared a video where he recounted his personal experiences with Bhandari, who served as the Governor of Gujarat. Shah mentioned, “As a member of the student council and youth wing, I often visited him. One day, I casually asked him about his leg, and he brushed it off with laughter. When I pressed further, he asked me not to share that information.”

Shah continued, “Though he is no longer with us, his words and insights continue to inspire us. He once shared that during his work in Rajasthan, resources were scarce. Food was not readily available. When he returned to the Sangh office, he would dry out the bread like clothes. He wrapped the dried bread in cloth and carried it in a bag on his bicycle, traveling from village to village to continue his work.”

Amit Shah noted that cycling had caused his calves to widen. When food was scarce, Bhandari would soak the dry bread in water before eating it, then resume his work for the Sangh. His ascetic lifestyle propelled the organization forward. “Even today, when I recall his words, it sends shivers down my spine,” Shah added.
