New Delhi, June 22: One of Eastern India’s most significant religious events, the annual Ambubachi Mela, is set to commence on Monday at the renowned Kamakhya Temple. Officials anticipate that over 800,000 devotees, pilgrims, sadhus, and tourists from across the country and abroad will participate in this four-day festival.
Celebrated as a symbol of female power and fertility, the Ambubachi Mela marks the annual menstrual cycle of Goddess Kamakhya. The goddess is revered as the embodiment of divine feminine creative energy. This festival is among the most important events related to the worship of Shakti in India, holding special significance for those who follow tantric traditions.
According to the temple administration, the religious rituals will begin on Monday night at 9:08:42 PM with the ‘Pravritti’ ceremony, symbolizing the start of this sacred time. Following the commencement of the rituals, the temple doors will remain closed for three days, during which devotees will not be allowed to enter the sanctum sanctorum.
The temple will reopen on the morning of June 26 after the ‘Nivritti’ ritual and traditional daily worship are completed. After this, devotees will be permitted to enter the temple for prayers and blessings.
Situated in the Nilachal Hills, Kamakhya Temple is one of the 51 Shakti Peethas and is regarded as one of the holiest pilgrimage sites for Hindus. During these three days, all religious activities within the temple are suspended, symbolizing the seclusion observed during the goddess’s menstrual cycle.
When the temple doors reopen, thousands of devotees are expected to gather to receive the sacred ‘Angodak’ and ‘Angavastra,’ which are considered highly auspicious.
The Assam government and Kamakhya Temple management have made extensive preparations for the festival. Special arrangements for security, healthcare, sanitation, accommodation, and food distribution have been implemented to ensure the smooth operation of the festival and the safety and convenience of the pilgrims.
Every year, the Ambubachi Mela transforms Guwahati into a vibrant hub of religious and spiritual activities, attracting millions of pilgrims, sadhus, and spiritual seekers. With preparations complete, officials are gearing up for another massive gathering at this historic temple, as devotees come together to celebrate one of the most sacred festivals dedicated to the goddess’s power.
