New Delhi, September 25 (Daily Kiran) : The Uttarakhand Waqf Board has unveiled a significant initiative aimed at supporting homeless women who have suffered from triple talaq and halala. Shadab Shams, the chairman of the Waqf Board, announced that the board’s land bank and properties will now be utilized for the rightful beneficiaries, including orphans, the needy, and widows.
Shams stated, “We have a land bank of Waqf properties. As caretakers, we possess several homes and assets. We will engage with the government to discuss how to best allocate these resources. I have spoken with our Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, who responded positively. Since the introduction of the Waqf Amendment Act, there is renewed hope among destitute women, and the poor will finally receive their rights. Following this line, the Uttarakhand government is set to make a decision.”
In an upcoming meeting next month, the board plans to propose support for women affected by triple talaq or halala who are currently homeless. The Waqf Board aims to provide them with housing to prevent them from wandering aimlessly. With the introduction of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) by the Uttarakhand government, efforts are underway to ensure that daughters receive their rightful entitlements. Shams emphasized that the Waqf was originally intended for those in need.
He added, “Waqf funds are meant for orphans, the needy, and widows. Unfortunately, some political leaders and their associates have misappropriated the true purpose of Waqf.”
The board’s goal is to fulfill this original mission, empowering these women by securing their rights and connecting them with employment opportunities. This way, they can become self-reliant and support their children without having to depend on others. Shams highlighted the pressures faced by women in Uttarakhand, noting incidents where daughters were coerced into staying in abusive situations, fearing they would be abandoned by their families after divorce.
