Washington, September 30 (Daily Kiran) : The U.S. Senate has taken a strong stance against forced organ harvesting in China by passing a bipartisan bill that calls for sanctions against responsible officials. The legislation, known as the “Falun Gong and Victims of Forced Organ Harvesting Protection Act,” was championed by Republican Senator Ted Cruz from Texas and Democratic Senator Jeff Merkley from Oregon, both members of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.
This new law aims to impose restrictions on officials involved in the organ harvesting practices and directs the U.S. Secretary of State to report to Congress on the Chinese Communist Party’s organ extraction policies and transplant systems.
After the Senate’s approval, Cruz stated, “The Chinese Communist Party continues to target Falun Gong practitioners through its brutal, state-sanctioned organ harvesting industry.” He emphasized that these atrocities represent an attack on religious freedom and basic human rights. Cruz expressed pride in collaborating with Senator Merkley to pass the bipartisan bill and urged his colleagues in the House to support it and send it to the President.
With this Senate action, the bill has advanced to the next stage in Congress, needing approval from the House before reaching the President’s desk. Merkley highlighted reports of forced organ harvesting linked to vulnerable groups in China.
He stated, “The horrific consequences of China’s repression and human rights violations are evident, including reports of forced organ harvesting from vulnerable populations across the People’s Republic of China.” Merkley underscored the importance of standing with the victims of these crimes, asserting that their bipartisan effort holds the Chinese government accountable for its abuses.
The bill has garnered support from a range of senators, including Republican co-sponsors Todd Young, Ron Johnson, Mike Rounds, Roger Marshall, Dave McCormick, and James Lankford, as well as Democratic senators Adam Schiff, Ron Wyden, Catherine Cortez Masto, and Raphael Warnock.
Cruz and Merkley initially introduced this bipartisan legislation in March 2026. Cruz had previously introduced the “Falun Gong Protection Act” in March 2025, specifically focusing on allegations against Falun Gong practitioners in China.
