Dehradun, July 22: The Uttarakhand government is fully alert in anticipation of potential flooding and natural disasters during the monsoon season. Disaster Management Secretary Vinod Kumar Suman stated that all necessary preparations have been completed to tackle any emergencies, and currently, all major national and state highways remain open. He emphasized that relief and rescue operations will commence immediately wherever needed.
In a recent conversation, Suman mentioned, “A crucial meeting regarding disaster management was held in Delhi. The central government has directed states to ensure the proper utilization of resources and funds provided. Any deficiencies will be addressed promptly, and necessary improvements will be made in areas facing challenges.”
He added, “During the rainy season, when river or reservoir water levels rise and pose a threat, the disaster management department proactively alerts the public. This is done through broadcast messages, SMS, WhatsApp groups, and with the assistance of district administration and police. If necessary, people will be relocated to safe places to prevent any loss of life.”
Suman noted, “In areas prone to flooding, efforts are ongoing to strengthen protective walls and improve drainage systems. The Chief Minister has issued clear instructions to take timely action wherever flooding is anticipated and to maintain the drainage system effectively.”
He also mentioned, “Uttarakhand’s disaster management preparations are not limited to the rainy season but are a year-round effort. The department regularly conducts mock drills, training, and exercises at various levels to ensure prompt and effective action in any emergency.”
The Secretary reported that if debris blocks any road due to rain, machinery and teams are on standby to clear the path as quickly as possible. Currently, all major highways in the state are fully operational, and efforts are ongoing to keep smaller routes open as well.
He stated, “JCB machines have been strategically deployed at sensitive and critical locations to enable immediate action in case of landslides or road closures.”
According to Vinod Kumar Suman, the disaster situation in the state is currently normal, but the administration remains vigilant and prepared to face any challenges.
