New Delhi, August 31: Vice President C.P. Radhakrishnan participated in a fisheries outreach program in Agatti, Lakshadweep, on Monday. During the event, he unveiled a strategic action plan for the development of ornamental fish farming, titled ‘Mission Colorful Fish 2031,’ and distributed various government benefits and assistance to beneficiaries in the fisheries sector.
Addressing the gathering, the Vice President described the occasion as a historic day for Lakshadweep and a new milestone in India’s ‘Blue Revolution.’ He referenced Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision, stating that the blue wheel in the Indian national flag symbolizes the ‘Blue Revolution’ and the potential of the marine economy. Under the Prime Minister’s leadership, India’s fisheries and aquaculture sector has emerged as a significant area of economic growth.
C.P. Radhakrishnan emphasized that the government is transforming governance by proactively reaching out to fishing communities with support and initiatives, rather than waiting for them to come forward. He noted that over ₹620 million has been approved for fisheries development projects in Lakshadweep under the ‘Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana.’
Highlighting Lakshadweep’s vast marine potential, the Vice President stated that the estimated fishing capacity of these islands exceeds 100,000 tons, including around 94,000 tons of tuna and similar fish. He stressed the need to utilize this capacity in a scientific and sustainable manner to ensure greater prosperity for island communities.
The Vice President also mentioned India’s growing marine food exports, which surpassed ₹730 billion in the last financial year, reaching over 120 countries. He asserted that initiatives related to EEZ and high seas would further strengthen India’s presence in the fisheries sector and global marine food markets.
Emphasizing sustainability, Radhakrishnan called for responsible fishing practices, conservation of marine resources, and strict action against illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing. He urged the youth to view fisheries not merely as a traditional profession but as a modern career driven by science, technology, innovation, and global opportunities.
Comparing it to the Green and White Revolutions, the Vice President stated that the ‘Blue Revolution’ also has the potential to transform the lives of fishing communities. He urged all stakeholders to collaborate in developing India’s ‘Blue Economy’ as a robust pillar for a prosperous India by 2047.
